Reacting to a Traumatic Experience
Trauma or a traumatic experience can leave a lasting impression on one’s soul and memory, causing difficulties in the future. When this event causes depression, anxiety, flashbacks, or hypervigilance it is given the diagnosis, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Traumatic experiences are not just for soldiers who have gone to war. There are many reasons someone would experience a distressing event where they felt threatened or vulnerable physically, emotionally or psychologically: a car accident, death of a loved one, natural disaster, or a violent criminal act.
